What Are the Different Types of Collagens?

Types of Collagen Protein

There are at least 28 different types of collagen proteins.

Five of these types are the common types of collagen proteins typically found in different collagen supplements.

  • Type I (1) Collagen
  • Type II (2) Collagen
  • Type III (3) Collagen
  • Type V (5) Collagen
  • Type X (10) Collagen

These five are an essential part of your physical structure and can be found all over the body. Here you can learn more about each of those types and how they relate to your body below.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. It is the main structural protein found in the body’s various connective tissues. You can consider it the glue, or even cement, that holds you together.

As you research, you will find varying viewpoints and opinions of which Collagens are best for different health benefits. Our purpose is to keep it as simple as we can and explain how collagen relates to your body and point out the specific benefits of Collagen Native Type 2 (CNT2) for joint health and improvement.

It is important to note that type 1, type 2 and type 3 collagens make up 80-90% of the collagens in your body and that type 2 collagen makes up the majority of collagen found in the joints.

Type 1 collagen is one of the most abundant types of collagen found in the body and it is primarily found in skin, tendons, organs, bones and the digestive tract. This type of collagen forms collagen fibers that resemble braided ropes in structure and make a very strong network connecting tissues together.

Type 2 collagen, as we mentioned above, is the major collagen found in cartilage. Cartilage is one of the connective tissues between the bones to form joints and protects the ends of the long bones. Cartilage also forms the disks in the spinal column and is present in joints all over the body. Type 2 collagen forms fibrils that provide the cartilage with tensile strength.

Additionally, it is the structural component of the rib cage, ear, nose and bronchial tubes. Degradation of cartilage in the joints leads to inflammation and arthritis which leads to joint pain. Read “Which Type of Collagen is Best” below on potential ways to improve joint health.

Supplementing with undenatured type 2 collagen may also help to trigger oral tolerance, where the body becomes less sensitive and reactive to foods that are consumed. Undenatured type 2 collagen may also help to stimulate the body’s own production of type 1 collagen and type 2 collagen.

Type 3 collagen helps give skin elasticity and firmness and is also used to form blood vessels and heart tissue.

Type 5 collagen is another type of fibril cartilage found in the skin, hair, and nails in very small amounts as well as more specialized tissues like the cornea, liver, lung and placenta.

Type 10 collagen is found in very small amounts in joints and bones.

Type II Collagen Products

Which Type of Collagen is Best?

SBEDGE®’s undenatured Collagen Native Type 2 (CNT2) is the full unadulterated collagen protein due to our gentle production processes.  It is not broken down into smaller peptide collagen molecules and its important natural shape is maintained.  This allows for more benefits to your health, more so than hydrolyzed collagen peptide products.  Type 2 Collagen helps to form the framework for the cartilage that protects your joints so it’s no wonder that this variety of collagen is often known for supporting joint health.

Our CNT2 product can also be known for its importance as being “bio-active.” This is a term for a substance, in this case an undenatured collagen molecule, that has a positive effect on a living organism (that’s you!), including your cells and tissues.  In the field of nutrition, bioactive compounds, like SBEDGE®’s Collagen Native Type 2, are distinguished as different from an essential nutrient, which is what a hydrolyzed collagen peptide would be considered.

Our Collagen Native Type 2 has an important distinction from others because it is the more Natural Collagen.  It may help to trigger other important biological processes in your body.

Type 2 collagen can also stimulate the production of both type 1 and type 2 collagens, giving you the potential benefits of both a type 1 and a type 2 collagen supplement.

There are peptide products that claim to have some or all of the above different types of collagen, but in the peptide form they are all broken down and don’t allow your body the benefit of bio-activity.

Also, since our product is taken orally in an encapsulated form, you can be sure to get the exact dosage that you need.
